Sewing Class Up cycling, Alteration and Dressmaking – Westport Campus

Course Overview

The aim of the course is to give students the skills, knowledge and understanding of basic dressmaking which will enable them to complete a garment.

  • Equipment needed for Dressmaking
  • Selecting the Correct Fabric
  • Fabric and Pattern Preparation
  • Following a Pattern
  • Tips for Cutting Fabric
  • How to mark your fabric

On completion of the course participants will have learned to:

  • Read a basic pattern
  • Make minor size adjustments
  • Mark each pattern piece
  • Cut out accurately
  • Use seam allowances
  • Assemble pieces
  • Finish off seams neatly.

 

Week 1

  • Demonstration of threading the machine
  • Getting to know the machine
  • Sewing designed lines on paper
  • Making and completing a pin cushion

Week 2

  • Threading the machine
  • How to fit and fill a bobbin
  • Cutting out a pattern
  • Sewing and completing an apron

Week 3

  • Upstyling on second hand clothing
  • Taking up hems
  • Make to fit
  • Adding to upcycle or removing, sleeves collars etc
  • Learning how to use bias binding.

Week 4

  • Continuing with up cycling
  • Shorts to Jeans
  • Long dress to a skirt and top
  • Demonstrating the Different sewing needles for different fabrics.

Week 5

  • How to read a pattern
  • How to cut a pattern
  • Pin a pattern
  • Cut a pattern
  • How to make a home-made simple patterns

Week 6,7 and 8

  • Students will decide what they would like to make for themselves,
  • Shorts
  • Shirt
  • Blouse
  • Trousers
  • Dresses

 

This will be top quality sewing. Students will be confident with the sewing machine

Straight Stitching, zig zag Threading the machine and changing the bobbin.

Students’ own project will take 3 weeks to complete.

Materials Needed: 

Measuring tape; pins; scissors x 2 (household for cutting paper and dressmaking for fabric); tailors chalk; fabric.

Participants can bring their own sewing machine to class if desired

February: 7th, 21st (6.30pm-8.30pm)
