This course provides students with an introduction to the different sectors of the security industry in Ireland. This Security and Policing Studies course is of particular relevance to students who are interested in a career in An Garda Siochana, the Defence Forces, Prison Service or Emergency Services. This course involves a focus on the academic skills and personal qualities required for a career in the security sector. As part of the work experience module, students complete work placements with recognised security companies.
This is a full-time one-year course which runs from September to May.
A Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent is required, although exceptions are given to mature students who are over 23 years of age. Entry is subject to interview.
Graduates are eligible to apply through the CAO for entry to year one of a range of related higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities (please check with the particular institution regarding local eligibility requirements).
This course in Private Security and Policing Studies has been designed to meet the needs of the security industry in line with the terms of the Private Security Services Act 2004. This Private Security and Policing Studies course is of particular relevance to students who are interested in a career in An Garda Síochana, the Defence Forces, Prison Services or the Private Security Industry.
There are no fees to study this course.
The aim of this module is to provide students with the competence and knowledge to provide and maintain a safe working environment.
This module provides students with the knowledge, skill and competence to work in the security industry as a security officer performing practical security duties and procedures, and responding to security situations in a variety of settings.
The retail security module gives students the necessary skills to work as a Retail Security Officer performing practical security duties and procedures, and responding to security situations, in order to maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and members of the public.
Students will learn to understand and resolve situations of conflict that arise in personal, social and work life, in a work environment operating independently while under general direction.
Analyse the characteristics, effects and consequences of criminal activities and recognise
appropriate investigation procedures when examining crime
scenes.
Work Experience placement in a related vocational area is an integral part of this course. Students must obtain work experience placement themselves.
