Our full-time QQI accredited QQI Level 5 award in Media Studies (Creative Media) leads directly to employment and/or to progression to a number of further education or third level institutes. Course Overview

On successful completion of the QQI Level 5 award in Media Studies (Creative Media) learners will have the skills, knowledge and competencies to work under supervision in one of the following broad range of roles – as an assistant in Television, Film, Advertising, Publishing, Photo Imaging industries or to progress to further and or higher education and training.

Employability Statement

The successful completion of the QQI Level 5 award in Media Studies (Creative Media) will enable applicants to work in a variety of creative media industries. Students can also progress to more specialised creative media courses at further/higher education/degree level. All students will also complete 60 hours in a work experience placement as part of their studies on this course.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required. However, applicants must demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course.

Learning Outcomes

The course is structured to provide students with a high standard of training and assessment leading to recognised certification. Throughout this course participants will:

  • acquire a broad range of knowledge related to the creative arts and media
  • be able to exercise judgment and skills in selecting and creating appropriate content
  • use a range of digital media (to produce materials including images, sound and video, for use in the creation of web pages/online publications)
  • learn how to create webpages and use the Internet & social media for business purposes
  • explore a broad range of creative media with a view to re-skilling/up-skilling and exploring concepts and subject areas which may be used to access further/higher education and employment

Digital Marketing

The Digital Marketing module will introduce students to the core competencies required to develop and execute digital marketing strategies and activities using a range of e-tools within a range of digital marketing contexts. It will provide a detailed understanding of what Digital Marketing is, major trends and important concepts such as:

  • Social media marketing on various platforms e.g. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, LinkedIn and other emerging social media
  • Rich Media e.g. videos, GIFs, Instagram stories, podcasts, content narration audio, infographics, live streams and topical webinars & other emerging rich media
  • e-mail Marketing e.g. automated email tools, permission-based email, etc
  • Search Engine Optimisation e.g. principles of SEO, including keywords, metatags, page titles, descriptions, headings, links etc., using website diagnostic tools and interpreting their data
  • Online Advertising e.g. Google AdSense and Google AdWords’, banner ads, targeted advertising on social media based on interests and pages visited, measuring user responses to ads, including views, impressions, click through rates, etc.

Communications

This module provides the communication skills needed to work on frontline customer relations.  It examines:

  • ways in which social media is used in the business environment
  • research and writing skills
  • preparation and practice of public speaking
  • develop negotiation skills

The Internet

Learn to use the internet effectively in a secure and confidential manner in a range of personal and work contexts. for communication, research, collaboration, e-Commerce and web authoring.

Advertising

Develop the skills and competence to plan, develop, assess and manage the advertising element within an overall marketing campaign.

Image Processing

Be able to visualise and plan all the stages involved in the production and manipulation of digital images. Students will learn the key techniques of image processing and how to use a range of computer hardware and software, configured for image processing purposes.

Media Analysis

In this module students will be equipped with the knowledge, skill and competence to identify successful media practices using the theoretical framework that underpins practical media work.

Digital Photography

The purpose of this module is to develop the skills required to reproduce professional standard images. The student will acquire a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of digital photographic production. They will also develop practical, critical and creative skills in the production of digital photographic images.

 Work Experience

Students will develop career planning skills such as,

  • Preparation of curriculum vitae and letter of application
  • Assessment of career goals/ and techniques for achieving these goals
  • Interview preparation and simulation
  • Research of and participation in suitable work experience
