The aim of this programme is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and understanding of the diverse elements within the sports industry with particular focus on injury management.  Students will be equipped with a variety of practical skills as well as a solid foundation in exercise science. This award affords students the dual opportunity to either seek employment or progress their studies at 3rd Level colleges in the area of Sport, Leisure and or Exercise Science. Practical elements of this course take place in The Movement gym, Castlebar. Successful students will receive a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Sports, Recreation & Exercise.  Further qualifications offered with this award include:

ITEC Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy (Level 3/4).

This is a full-time one-year course which runs from September to May.

Exercise & Fitness – 5N2668

Provides the learner with the relevant knowledge and instructional skills to assist an exercise instructor in the delivery of a safe and effective exercise programme or class.

 

Sports and Recreation Studies – 5N2667

Provides the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the theory and practice underpinning sport and recreation activities to enable the learner to work under supervision in a variety of sport, recreation and exercise contexts

 

Nutrition – 5N2006

Provides the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to understand the nutritional composition of food and the effects of food and nutrition on an individual’s health and personal well-being.

 

Anatomy & Physiology – 5N4648

Furnishes the learner with knowledge, skill and competence to understand the structure and function of the human body and the interrelationship between its systems.

 

Sports & Exercise Injury Prevention – 5N5665

Develops the knowledge and practical skills to allow the learner to identify, treat and rehabilitate athletes with different sporting injuries

 

Body Massage and Figure Analysis – 5N3465

Enables students to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to prepare for and provide body massage treatments. Students develop an understanding of and carry out an effective figure analysis treatment and learn to recognise its interrelationship with body massage. In order to become a successful massage therapist in the beauty industry students learn a range of skills and techniques as well as the necessary personal qualities and attitudes.

 

Communications

Facilitates the learner to acquire communication skills relevant to vocational and personal development.

 

Work Experience

Allows the learner to gain personal knowledge, skills and capacity while participating in a suitable work placement, for a limited time, under supervision.

Entry Requirements

A Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent is required, although exceptions are given to mature students who are over 23 years of age. Entry is subject to interview.
