Course Duration

This is a one year, full time course running from September to May.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied. For mature students (over 23) these requirements need not apply and applications will be considered based on a proven interest in the motor trade. Places are limited and entry is subject to interview.

Course Progression

Upon successful completion of this course, learners may be eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to a range of higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities.  Examples include:

Motor Vehicle Theory 5N2144

Studying this module content will enable and assist the learner to:

  • Become familiar with the main components and systems of a motor vehicle.
  • Use a wide variety of tools correctly and maintain them.
  • Dismantle and reassemble a wide variety of components on a motor vehicle.
  • Appreciate the need to maintain a motor vehicle properly
  • Develop safe working practices when working on a motor vehicle and become aware of modern developments in the motor vehicle.
  • Become aware of modern developments in the motor vehicle.

Practical Skills Demonstration 60%, Examination 40%

Auto Electricity 5N2137

This module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge to :

  • Understand the operation of a wide variety of electrical components on a motor vehicle.
  • Acquire manual dexterity in the use of electronic test equipment such as a multimeter, battery testers and diagnostic scan tools.
  • Develop a logical process for fault finding during diagnostics
  • Assist the learner to interpret circuit diagrams, identify symbols and construct low voltage electrical circuits
  • Develop safe working practices when working on the electrical system of a motor vehicle

Motor Vehicle Practice 5N2143

Studying this module content will enable and assist the learner to:

  • Carry out a wide range of maintenance tasks on a motor vehicle
  • Appreciate when certain repairs require the intervention of a mechanic
  • Become familiar with the functions of various components of a motor vehicle
  • Develop manual dexterity in the use of tools and equipment
  • Take care of tools and equipment competently
  • Develop safe working practices and become aware of common hazards in the workplace and suggest initiatives aimed at reducing those associated risks.
  • Design a system for recording visual inspection data during maintenance

Engineering Workshop Processes 5N1608

This module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge to :

  • Become competent working with various engineering equipment such as Lathe, Pillar drill, CNC lathe, Arc welder, Mig Welder etc.
  • Develop manual dexterity with hand tools and marking out equipment
  • Gain an understanding of key terminology, symbols and units of measurement in the engineering environment
  • Fabricate components out of various materials including aluminium, brass, copper, mild steel and types of plastic
  • Develop good work practices and appreciate the need for health and safety requirements in the workplace

Assessment Criteria:
Project 50%, Skills Demonstration 50%

Electronics 5N1606

This module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge to:

  • Identify a wide range of electronic components and their symbols
  • Build a range of electronic circuits from design to completion
  • Develop a logical process for fault finding during diagnostics
  • Use appropriate test equipment
  • Develop the skills develop safe working practices
  • Perform a variety of calculations for circuits and components

Safety & Health at Work

This module is designed to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge to promote and maintain safety and health in the working environment. Emphasis will be placed on safety within a Hairdressing Salon.

Communications 5N0690

Students studying Communications Level 5 will be able to do with the following:

  • Analysis of a range of current issues in communications and information technology.
  • Summarise in practical terms the elements of legislation that must be observed in a personal and/or work context, to include health, safety and welfare at work and communications-related legislation.
  • Use appropriate non-verbal and visual communication in personal and work-related settings, to include one-to-one, in a group/team, and in formal and informal interaction.
  • Demonstrate verbal skills appropriate to working under general direction, to include making a case and presenting a point of view in group discussion, formal meetings, interviews.
  • Demonstrate listening skills appropriate to working under general direction, to include making eye contact, receiving and interpreting information, control of personal response.
  • Research a relevant vocational topic, to include use of primary and secondary sources, acknowledgement of sources, use of enquiry techniques and methods to establish validity and reliability

Work Experience 5N1356

Students studying Work Experience Level 5 will do the following:

  • Examine work organisations and personal career opportunities in a particular vocational area, to include consideration of work-related issues and needs.
  • Summarise the basic rights and responsibilities of employees and employers in a particular work, organisational or institutional context, to include health, safety and welfare at work, equality legislation, union representation and regulations relating to pay.
  • Present relevant work experience material, to include a Curriculum Vitae or personal statement, letter of application, evidence of job-finding skills, skills checklist, statement of learning goals, contractual arrangements.
  • Participate effectively in a work experience placement for a minimum of 60 hours to gain experience/insight into their chosen vocational area.

Assessment Criteria:
Collection of Work – 60%, Skills Demonstration – 40%
