Maggie graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway (now the University of Galway) in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Microbiology and An Dioploma sa Ghaeilge (the Irish language). From there Maggie worked for the Irish Blood Transfusion Service for 18 months before joining the Component Development Team in NHS Blood and Transplant, Cambridge, UK. During her years as a component development scientist and senior component development scientist in Cambridge, Maggie worked on many research projects including potassium leakage in red cells, reduced dose apheresis platelet concentrates and the improvement of neonatal platelet concentrate products for which Maggie received an NHSBT Recognition of Excellence award. It was also during this time that Maggie obtained a PhD from the University of Sunderland. Her research, which was based in NHSBT, focused on treating and improving outcomes of patients with major haemorrhage following trauma by developing new techniques to better assess blood products and in developing a novel blood product specifically designed to treat bleeding patients.
Maggie joined Mayo College in 2022 and is the course co-ordinator for the Pre-University Science programme. Maggie is passionate about teaching, upskilling and mentoring the next generation of scientists along the west coast of Ireland.
